One of Grand Valley State University's newest projects is their new Marketplace, which provides the Allendale campus with a new bookstore and a new food court. Planning for the Marketplace recognized its role as a major campus destination and focal point for student life. Its location provides a much higher degree of visibility and awareness of the bookstore for students and visitors alike and, as the Marketplace is conveniently connected to the new Hall of Science, will enliven and contribute to the culture of the science laboratory.
The Marketplace design features distinctive architecture that lends an individual identity to the facility while being sympathetic to the campus context. The interior design strategy of a store within a store provides a variety of experiences and choices for customers with customized merchandise displays. A second level technology area offers computers/technology accessories and provide a venue for training events. Locating the bookstore warehouse in the facility lends operational efficiencies to GVSU. Also located in the lower level of the building are the bookstore’s printing operation and customer package pick-up are.
The food court will offer a Starbucks coffee kiosk and a WhichWich sandwich shop. Seating for customers and students will support the food venues and also provide a gathering place for student study and socialization.
