City of Grand Rapids | Pedestrian Safety Improvements

The City of Grand Rapids received a grant to make pedestrian paths traversing the major highways (8 total) within the City of Grand Rapids safer and more inviting. In addition to managing sidewalk improvements, landscaping improvements, and general safety lighting enhancements, Fishbeck designed decorative lighting at the Cherry Street and Bridge Street underpasses. The decorative lighting was designed to create a more welcoming and interesting environment to encourage pedestrians to approach these areas and walk to the other side of the highway, reducing the barrier that a major state highway could create through the middle of the downtown. Fishbeck participated in a community involvement meeting to further define the decorative lighting. Fishbeck provided design, permitting, and construction administration for the decorative lighting portion of the project. The decorative lighting consists of color changing LED lighting and controls that can be programmed with endless color schemes. The controls utilize the same controller used elsewhere in the City of Grand Rapids, for familiarity of programming.
