Ottawa County Courthouse Facility
TheOttawa County Courthouse in Grand Haven, Michigan, outgrew the 1960s-era design and led to construction of a new courthouse. FTCH teamed with HDR Architecture and solicited input from the building user groups, County and City officials, the Sheriff’s Department, the City’s Department of Public Safety, and the public to identify goals, establish the budget, and explore design options.
The design of the new courthouse needed to respect the historic character of the original 1890s court, while providing flexible interior space, meeting current space needs, providing a safe environment for the public and staff, and supporting current and future technology.
The new 117,600-sf building was constructed next to the existing facility, maintaining use of the buildings without any interruptions. The facility features six courtrooms with modern security and technology features. It also includes space for all court departments including the Friend of the Court and the Prosecuting Attorney. Numerous security upgrades were integrated into the building including a sally port; lower level holding area; a secure core and elevator that provides secure, controlled access to all courtrooms; and a simple, effective, plan layout that separates the public from staff.
