Sustainable Site Design

FTC&H believes respecting the environment is the right thing to do and is committed to the design of environmentally responsible sites.

FTC&H is a recognized comprehensive and knowledgeable resource for clients who strive to incorporate sustainable design practices involving all aspects of site and building design and construction. Our staff strives to respond to clients with innovative designs, technical quality, and exceptional service. Since 1956, FTC&H has established a reputation for superior civil engineering design. To achieve a successful project, the entire design team must coordinate all design aspects from the very beginning, with proper site selection being one of the first things addressed in the preliminary design phase.

Sustainable site design requires careful consideration for the location, orientation, and landscaping of a building. The setting of a building affects the natural environment, building energy consumption, and indoor environmental quality. Designers are responsible for transportation methods, greenfield effects, storm water management, local plant and animal species, and orientation of the building to optimize passive heating, natural ventilation and daylighting. The location of access roads, parking areas, sidewalks, and landscaping must be integrated into the design along with sustainable site considerations. The coordination of all these aspects can be the deciding factor for the success of a project and meeting a client’s needs and intent.

Our engineers and scientists have been involved in several innovative and award-winning design projects, and have the technical capabilities and experience to take a project from the conceptual phase through construction completion. Our experience includes sustainable site layout design for over 35 LEED certified building projects, porous pavement design, storm water best management practices (BMPs) and treatment train design, rain garden design, rainwater reuse for irrigation, and wetland design.
