Air Quality

FTC&H has one of Michigan's largest technical groups dedicated to air quality. Offering a broad mix of expertise — chemical engineers, environmental engineers, regulatory specialists, biologists, mechanical engineers — this group provides practical and economical solutions for sometimes complex matters.

Project Profiles

Tesa Tape, Inc.
Sparta, Michigan

Tesa Tape, Inc., a major manufacturer of pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes, has recently completed a project that greatly reduces the emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) from its tape coating process. With assistance from FTC&H staff, Tesa Tape obtained an air use permit for the installation of a new regenerative thermal oxidizer (RTO) to control process and fugitive emissions.

FTC&H staff also worked with the RTO manufacturer in the design of the ventilation system for the project. The new ventilation equipment captures all of the VOCs and HAPs from the coating process and directs them to the RTO for greater than 99 percent destruction. With the reduction in emissions, Tesa Tape has been reclassified as a “minor source” of VOCs and HAPs.

Albar Industries, Inc.
Lapeer, Michigan

Albar Industries, Inc. coats plastic and metal automotive parts. FTC&H prepared MAERS and air use permit modifications which included top-down BACT analysis and computer dispersion modeling. FTC&H successfully expedited a PSD air permit with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality in less than two months, finalizing permit conditions and public participation documents.

Cytec Industries, Inc.
West Paterson, New Jersey

Cytec Industries, Inc., a leading chemical manufacturer contracted FTC&H to prepare air use permits, opt-out permit, MAERS record-keeping, emission reduction credit registration, control equipment efficiency evaluations, and process emission estimates utilizing the Emission Master Program. FTC&H helped develop a preventative maintenance plan for their control equipment.

Howmet Corporation
Whitehall, Michigan

Howmet Corporation facilities include metal alloying, investment casting, fixed-mold casting, spray forming, coating, treating, and R&D businesses. FTC&H prepared MAERS reports, air use permits and modifications, 208a registration and detailed record-keeping documentation, and emission inventories for six plants. FTC&H worked with Howmet staff to successfully meet the project deadlines.
