Sustainable Design

Sustainable Design

FTC&H believes design should emerge out of a commitment to environmental stewardship while working within the economic constraints of a project.

Sustainable design is design that strives for energy efficiency, stewardship of natural resources, and minimizing harmful environmental impacts. It considers the life time costs of a project, not just its initial construction costs. It chooses building materials that are renewable, recycled, and durable.

Sustainability principles impact every aspect of a design project from selecting construction materials, choosing the location and orientation of a building, engineering a site’s storm water system, to selecting a building’s heating system. FTC&H’s engineers and architects have played a significant leadership role in the green building movement since its inception. They have in-depth knowledge to select the most appropriate sustainable options for site development, while considering life time costs and the unique characteristics of the site.

We have 28 LEED® Accredited Professionals (AP) on staff experienced in applying sustainability principles to buildings, interiors, and landscapes.

We understand designing for the environment is more than the application of sustainable design strategies and technologies. It is combining these elements to create innovative and functional spaces that lift the human spirit.
